Item # 9883, Carousel 1/18 1969 Greenwood Corvette #48 L88 Race Car
The Corvette L-88's were created to blow the doors off everything else on the tracks in the USA and Europe. Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov worked to produce as much power as possible within the limits of the existing Chevy 427 cubic inch V-8. Aluminum heads and a number of special, heavy-duty components were added to the engine. The L-88 was intended for racing only and prone to overheating at low speeds, but it was fully street legal and came with complete emissions equipment.
Other modifications to the 1968 Corvette L-88 included a cold air intake hood, while the 1969 Corvette L-88's added fender flares that came uninstalled on the car. The four-wheel disc brakes were heavy-duty, along with a Muncie M-22 'Rock-Crusher' 4-speed transmission, heavy-duty suspension and positraction. Radio and air conditioning were not available, but there was a heater/defroster. Chevrolet produced 80 Corvette L-88's in 1968 and 116 in 1969,
Chevrolet homologated the 1968-style L-88 for international competition with the FIA from January 1, 1968.
The "Stars and Stripes" Corvette seen here that raced by John Greenwood and Dick Smothers was sponored by B.F. Goodrich and was very popular. It could cover the quarter mile in 11 seconds flat on a road racing suspension at 130 MPH and was reported to have a top speed of over 220 MPH. Under Greenwood's wrench, this car made close to 800 HP reportedly and was very competitive.
This 1/18th scale model is in excellent condition and features many, many fine details. The unique racing seat for the driver sports a red seatbelt while the passenger seat is stock. A rollcage lets you know that this car is all business. The 427 under the hood is fully plumbed and wired. The suspension is especially unique and detailed, right down to the individual leaf springs in the independent rear suspension.
The box for this item is also in excellent condition. The box has a really neat Corvette garage scene printed on the interior. Each car in this limted edition series is individually serialized.
If you are a Corvette fan, you would almost feel ashamed if you didn't bid on this NO RESERVE auction. So, do it now!
